I like to think of fasting as the Home Interior experience.
“Welp,” yells God, “we took out ignorance, and replaced it with a lovely island of discernment and knowledge. And over here, if you’ll notice, we upgraded your pantry. Now you’ll have more room to store things that really matter to Me.”
I’ve heard time and again that fasting is for the Christian more than it is Heaven, but I could never wrap my mind around the ‘why’ until now. When you fast, and the old is ripped away from you to indeed “make you a new creature,” it is also the upgrading that your spirit needs in order store the Holy Spirit and His gifts, tools, and blessings at a higher capacity. When the old is passing away and becoming new, He’s not just giving you a higher dose of the tingles—He’s giving you more room to carry Him and His glory.
That’s why our fasts must be pleasing and acceptable to Him.
Refer back to Part 1 of this conversation. One of the key components to successful fasting was building a trust bridge between ourselves and God. Oftentimes, we are asking for something that our flesh has proven we can’t handle.
God is looking at how we handle our horizontal investment before the vertical expression is poured out. So, what are you gonna do with His blessings?
We talked about things that you could fast for. Here are some examples:
If you’re the encourager of the group, you might want to consider fasting so that God can expand your hope vessel. You give away so much of it, sometimes there’s barely any left for you. God can fill that void up. That’s what fasting does! It empties the stale wine and refreshes your storehouse.
(Interesting side note—when the Bible references us going into our “closet” to pray, another literal translation calls it the “storeroom.” I took that to believe that we are going into our spiritual pantry. We’re tossing out the expired items and restocking with plenty.)
When we start to give of what we’re asking for—that’s when we start to grab God’s attention.
